Deviant Life isn’t the first time D.White and I have worked on an online comic project together, as we’ve been friends for the better part of three decades. The world has only seen a tiny sliver of the stuff we’ve created together since we met in seventh grade.
A long, long time ago there was Roth & Earl, a comic about a redneck and a goth being roommates. Sadly, I didn’t really know what the hell I was doing back then so it never got much of an audience and most of the strips have only survived my lack of organizational skills in terrible resolution messes. I really loved those characters, though, and had been thinking about working Rhianna into the cast already when D. White suggested we do a triple-size Deviant Life/Roth & Earl crossover for Deviant Life’s 25th strip.
Rhianna and Roth’s Sadistic/masochistic dynamic had been mentioned a few times throughout the Roth & Earl strips and it was established that they weren’t entirely monogamous either so Rhianna joining the cast wasn’t any kind of stretch for her character. I was also looking for a way to establish that Bernard was a switch so it just seemed natural to make Rhianna and Bernard an item.
I could probably count on my fingers the number of people I know who remember Roth & Earl, so really this crossover is pretty self-indulgent, but I also know that a bunch of those who do remember are going to squee hard over seeing these characters again. I just hope those who don’t know these characters still enjoy it too.
This is my favorite holiday because it’s about letting imagination run wild, celebrating the dark and macabre, confronting fears, expanding our comfort zone, and exploring ourselves through the identities we choose to slip into for a night.
I hope everyone has the Halloween experiences they desire, so long as it’s all in good fun and no harm is done.
On that note, remember that wearing a costume is not inherently consent to be touched no matter how sexy or skimpy it is, people who are intoxicated cannot consent, and if someone gives you any indication that they’re not enjoying their interactions with you then you should back off. We’re supposed to be pretending to be fantasy monsters, not actually being real monsters.
Happy Celebrate Bisexuality Day! Well, happy day before Celebrate Bisexuality Day, anyway. Being bisexual myself, I’m glad I actually managed to be aware enough of when the day was to make sure a strip about it fell on the same weekend.
The dark haired woman, by the way, is Joy. I don’t think I mentioned her name in her first appearance. To clear up some confusion people had about her, she’s a cis-woman who frequently dresses in traditionally male clothes.
Fun fact, though, Bernard’s brother Sam is trans. The first strip I wrote with him would have made that clear, but it was scrapped because it was more sad and potentially triggering than funny, being about how awful their extremely conservative parents are and why Bernard will be joining his brother in not having anything to do with them.
As usual, I want to signal boost the next Stigma Unbound event, Stigma Unbound: Lust for Life. I’m not affiliated with them, but I can almost always be found at them.
I often say that tabletop role-playing games are my second favorite group activity, the first being sex. Given how hard it can be to get into a decent game of Dungeons & Dragons when you’re an adult, I can absolutely understand Bernard’s priorities here.
While the ongoing comic strips will still be black and white, I felt like we needed to go the extra mile for our Patreon sponsors and make the monthly pin-ups, which $3+ patrons will receive digitally and $10+ patrons will receive physical prints of, in color.
Of course, every dealer in vice knows the principle of The First One Is Free so this one is for everyone digitally. $10+ patrons who pledge by the end of July will get a physical copy of this one as a bonus along with the August patron only pin up.
Remember, if we meet our first Patreon goal of $100 per month, we will start putting out Deviant Life strips every week instead of every other week.
